About Kaegan Mays-Williams

Vote for Kaegan For New York State Senate - District 21 on August 23, 2022

Kaegan Mays-Williams is a mother, a former Manhattan Assistant District Attorney and currently serves as state legislative and policy Counsel for Everytown for Gun Safety. She was raised by a single mother who always reminded Kaegan that she needed to fight for a better future for herself and her community. Yet in the district that Kaegan calls home, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused tremendous suffering and a great deal of loss—many people have lost their jobs, several community members have lost their small businesses, and far too many neighbors have lost their lives. Now she’s running for State Senate because just going back to “normal” just isn’t an option for her community.

Kaegan, a Black woman wearing a green shirt, speaks to two voters. One is wearing a yellow dress and sitting on a park bench; the other is standing next to her. Behind them are storefronts in Flatbush, Brooklyn.

The Issues

Kaegan is running for State Senate to give the power back to her neighbors in New York’s 21st Senate District, because for too long, her neighbors have been shut out of the political process.

She’s the candidate with the experience needed, as both a lawyer and a mom, to get started on day 1 making Brooklyn a better place for working families to call home.

  • No New Yorker should have to wonder where they will get their next meal. More than 1.6 million New Yorkers are food insecure, including 1 out of 3 children. In order to end hunger in New York, we need to address root causes and systemic inequities.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the structural inequities that have led us to a moment where even more women, particularly mothers, must choose between work and caring for their families. Childcare providers throughout our District have closed which have left parents of young children and childcare workers without support. We need a mom in office who knows firsthand how to relieve working families.

  • Our neighborhood is a unique mixture of both renters — who represent almost 70% of our community members — and small, local landlords who provide much-needed affordable housing for those renters. We must increase funding for both the Emergency Rental Assistance Program and the Landlord Rental Assistance Program to ensure that both renters and small landlords are able to secure their housing.

  • Firearm homicides are rising in our District, and we need sustainable funding solutions to combat gun violence. As Counsel at Everytown for Gun Safety, Kaegan has spent the last 3 years drafting and pushing for legislation to reduce gun violence.
